The area was overgrown until the 1970's which kept the site a secret and therefore in excellent condition. The stone platform is 340 feet by 415 feet. It covers almost three acres!

    • Attempting to cleanse the land of past evils, church members approached the heiau and saw a warrior standing on the wall confronting them. Suddenly, the warrior turned and fled, and chariots appeared in the sky. The property owners have been most reluctant to allow the public anywhere near the heiau, believing that "if you call them, they will eat you."

    • Tt was here, according to Polynesian legend, that the demigod, Maui captured the sun and held it captive to give his people more daylight hours. And it is here that you will stand to capture an unforgettable scenic memory. From the crater's topmost rim to its floor is a drop of 3,000 feet. The floor measures 25 square miles, a facinating area of richly colored cinder cones. Haleakala's last eruption was more than 200 years ago.
