WHAT YOU'LL DO
EXPLORE ROAD TO HANA
Location: Maui's North-Eastern Coast | Difficulty Level: Easy
We start of the day in the quaint sugar plantation town of Paia, with its many restaurants and shops. It is like stepping back twenty years in time and you will feel like you are on a movie set. No modern architecture or big box chain stores here ... just a remembrance of a time when life was a lot slower on Maui. From here we will drive by the world famous Hookipa Beach Park, where wind surfers from around the world come each year to test their skills against mother nature and the relentless off shore breezes as they sweep down to the shore from the top of Haleakala.
First stop is the beautiful Keanae Peninsula, with its ancient taro fields that are still in use till today! You may even get lucky and see turtles and whales frolicking in the ocean ... and explore the exotic fauna and flora of the pristine Hawaiian rain forests. The scenery of Maui is striking, and the Hana Highway is a uniquely built highway, originally used for the sugar plantation workers on their daily commute to work to the cane fields in the verdant lands of the north coast. The best way for you to experience the famed Road to Hana highway is with an expert tour guide, who navigates this road daily.
There are 59 one-lane bridges along Hana Highway, but the nice thing is that there are rivers, streams and waterfalls at just about every bridge. Driving the Hana Highway on your own is a very stressful experience and should be left to professionals, like our guides, allowing you to take in and enjoy the scenery along the way, rather than having cars behind you honking their horns to make you speed up!
Narrow, winding roads. Weather conditions are subject to rain.
