Your Maui Visit

Maui is one of the most beautiful islands in the world.  Its white and black sand beaches, waterfalls and tropical rainforests are a fantasy come true.  Not to be missed is the sprawling Haleakala National Park which encompasses the island’s highest peak, as well as the seven sacred pools Oheo Gulch.  The latter can be accessed via scenic and winding Road to Hana.

Maui has something for everyone and this is why is such a popular vacation destination for families, singles, couples, and honeymooners. Here you experience a great mixture of luxury resorts, countryside, relaxation and excitement. Come see why visitors from around the world call us the “magic isle.”

For more details on fun things to do in Maui, local attractions, tour & activities, check out our Things To Do.

Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park is home to the highest peak in Maui, as well as the dormant Haleakalā Volcano and endangered Hawaiian geese. It was originally created as part of the Hawaii National Park along with the volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the island of Hawaiʻi in 1916.  The name Haleakala is Hawaiian for "house of the sun." Local legend says the semigod Maui imprisoned the sun here in order to lengthen the day.

Hana, Maui

A peaceful town nestled along the eastern coastline of Maui, Hana is the destination to one of the world’s most beautiful scenic drives: The Road to Hana.  The road provides a great variety of opportunities for stops and views including evergreen rainforests, breathtaking waterfalls, and jaw dropping seascapes.  Sunbathe at Hana Beach Park or Hamoa White Sand Beach or snorkel at Waianapanapa State Park, a beautiful black sand beach. If interested in culture and nature, visit Hale Piilani, the state’s largest Hawaiian temple or stop by Kanahu Gardens, one of Hawaii’s five National Tropical Botanical Gardens.

Honolua Bay, Maui

Honolua Bay is a world famous destination for surfers looking to ride the biggest waves. It’s a jaw dropping experience to watch these thrill seekers venture out into the arms of the ocean sliding right back into the feet of the earth.

Iao Valley State Park, Maui

Iao, meaning in Hawaiian "cloud supreme", is a lush, stream-cut valley in West Maui. Due to its natural beauty and historical significance, it is now one of the most popular sites in Maui. The Iao Needle (Kukaemoku) is a famous landmark in the state park, a vegetation-covered lava remnant rising 1,200 feet from the valley floor. The "needle" itself is an illusion, and is in reality a sharp ridge that gives the appearance of being a spire when viewed end-on. The needle is sometimes covered in clouds, so an early start is your best bet for a good view.

Kaanapali Beach, Maui

Kaanapali Beach is a mile-long Beach on the western shore of Maui, a couple miles north of the old whaling town of Lahaina. Today Kaanapali Beach is the signature beach of West Maui.  At one point, this beach area was the retreat for the royalty of Maui and today is the site of the most model resorts in the world. One of the most well known snorkeling spots on Maui for snorkeling is Black Rock. The Black Rock is a finger of lava that separates the two sides of Kaanapali Beach.  There is a daily cliff diving ceremony at sunset where a diver lights torches and walks along the cliff as a reenactment of a feat by Maui’s revered king Kahekili.

Lahaina, Maui

Lahaina is a historic whaling town in West Maui, and the gateway to the Kaanapali and Kapalua beach resorts to its north.

Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845, when the capital was moved back to Honolulu. Today it has been transformed into the home of art galleries and quaint shops and restaurants. During the whaling era of the mid-1800’s, Lahaina became a historic whaling town from where thousands of sailors and hundreds of ships took sail as Herman Melville immortalized in his classic novel, Moby Dick. Today it remains as one of the most popular whale watching spots in Maui.

Makawao, Maui

Located on the rural northwest slope of Haleakala on East Maui, the community is known for being the hub of the "Upcountry," a part of the island covered by mostly agriculture and ranch land.  Nestled on the mid-slopes of Haleakala volcano, Makawao is where Maui’s plantation past and the present growing community of artists merge into one.  If you happen to visit Maui during the Fourth of July weekend, make sure to attend the Makawao Rodeo where paniolos (Hawaii cowboys) competitions have been a tradition for more than half of a century.

Makena Beach State Park (Big Beach), Maui

Makena Beach, also known as “Big Beach,” is a popular spot for sunbathing and body boarding by both tourists and locals. Big Beach is 1.5 miles and its shore is fairly protected from wind. The "Makena cloud" stretches from the top of Haleakala to Kahoolawe and is often overhead, cooling the sand.

Molokini, Maui

Molokini has a crescent shape protects divers and snorkelers from waves and currents. However, experienced scuba divers will also drift dive off the 300-foot sheer outer wall, using the channel currents to carry them along. The volcano crater at Molokini houses a lush reef with excellent visibility as deep as 150 feet and is home to about 250 species of fish.  One of the best diving and snorkeling experiences in all of Maui.

Pools of Oheo, Maui

These beautiful pools of cascading waterfalls are located just past Hana, Maui. Within a lush and very grown green forest, Oheo is the result of over countless millennia of water streams. It is punctuated regularly along its course by cascading waterfalls and plunge pools until it empties into the Hawaiian ocean along the Kipahulu coastline.

Wailuku, Maui

The capital of Maui is Wailuku, a little quaint town and home to Historic sites including Kaahumanu Church (named after one of Hawaii’s great monarch, Queen Kaahumanu) which dates to 1876, the Wailuku Civic Center Historic District, the site of the Chee Kung Tong Society Building, and the Bailey House, a 19th-century former seminary and home that houses a history museum and the Maui Historical Society.

Best Beaches in Maui

Waianapanapa State Park: In east Maui, a few miles before Hana, the 120 acres of this state park offer 12 cabins, a picnic area, a seashore hiking trail, and, a black-sand beach. Swimming is generally unsafe due to strong waves and rip currents, but it is still a good spot for picnicking, seashore hiking or just relaxing.

Hamoa Beach: This half-moon-shaped, gray-sand beach (a mix of coral and lava) in a truly paradise setting is a favorite among snorkelers, body surfers and sunbathers in Hana. The beach is 100-foot wide and about 900 feet long and sits below black-lava sea cliffs. Hamoa Beach is not protected from the ocean and is often swept by powerful rip currents which make it a popular area for surfing and bodysurfing.  There is calmer side good for summer snorkeling.

D.T. Fleming Beach Park: This is a quiet, out-of-the-way beach, found between the 16th hole of the Kapalua Golf Course (Makaluapuna Point) and the sea cliffs on the other side of the cove north of the Ritz Carlton Hotel. It is normally great for swimming and snorkeling except by the cliffs where the waters are better for body boarders and surfers.

Kapalua Beach: On paradise island, Kapalua Beach is the golden one. Protected from strong winds by swaying palm trees Kapalua has calm waters great for snorkeling, swimming, and kayaking.  The grounds include showers, restrooms, and lifeguards.

Kaanapali Beach: Kaanapali is truly one of Maui's best beaches, covered with gold sand as far as the eye can see. It parallels a paved beach walk connecting to hotels, condos, open-air restaurants, and the Whalers Village shopping center. During the summer is great for snorkeling around Black Rock, in front of the Sheraton.  The waters are normally calm, clear and full of bright tropical fish.

Wailea Beach: This is the best beach in the southwestern coast. It is one of the five beaches within Wailea Resort and it is big, wide, and protected on both sides by black-lava points.  Wailea is located in front of the Four Seasons Resort, Maui's most elegant hotel, and almost as beautiful Grand Wailea Resort. From the beach, you can enjoy a jaw dropping view sided by Kahoolawe and Lanai and faint crescent sight of Molokini in the distance.  The beaches on the west and south coasts are great for spotting whales, but Wailea, provides exceptionally good whale-watching from the sea shore between Dec-Apr.

Maluaka Beach (Makena Beach): On the southern end of Maui's the shore becomes less developed and more natural and wild with dry countryside punctuated by green kiawe trees. This golden sand beach is located between two black-lava points and bounded by big sand dunes. Makena can be perfect for swimming when it's calm and tranquil, but it can also offer great bodysurfing when the waves are chopping in.

Arriving in Maui

Once you arrive at Maui’s Kahului Airport (OGG), you will pick up your bags and head to the rent a car location, or your hotel shuttle, to make your way to your hotel, resort or Airbnb accommodations. The airport is small and very easy to navigate. There are plenty of bathroom facilities. You also can go outside to breathe the beautiful Maui ocean air while you wait for your luggage.  If you are traveling with family or friends, we recommend for you to pick up the rental car first while the rest of your party waits for the luggage. By the time the luggage are claimed you will be waiting for your party by the curb.  This is very convenient because you don’t have to carry your entire suitcase in the rental car shuttle which is which is really a hassle to carry up and down.

Airport to Hotel Transportation

If you are not renting a car at the airport transportation is available to your Maui hotel via shuttle busses.  However, we recommend visitors to rent a car. You will need a car to get to your activities and rented cars in Maui are cheap and with unlimited miles.   However, we recommend for the Road to Hana you first take a tour so you can learn about all the legends, and find all the hidden places that only locals know.  Also, you may want an experienced driver handling the winding road since it is a only one lane. Also, driving in the back roads of Hana might violate terms of your rental car agreement.  If you happen to get a flat tire or damage the car you may be out of luck and it will be very expensive (over $500) to get a tow truck to take you to the closest mechanic in Kahului.  Remember the rented car will not pay for the tow since it might be a violation of the rental car agreement to drive in the back side of the Road to Hana.

Cheap Maui Car Rentals

You will find all national rent a car companies at Kahului airport: Hertz, Enterprise, Alamo, Dollar, Budget, Thrifty, Alamo, Avis.  There are also smaller local rent a car companies.  Choose from convertibles, SUV's, minivans, full size, or economy cars.  CLICK HERE TO FIND CHEAPEST MAUI RENT A CAR
